To obtain a driver's license in Mexico City for the first time, it is necessary to take a theoretical exam. This procedure can be carried out at the 35 modules of the Mobility Secretariat (Semovi) or at the PILARES facilities in CDMX. The cost of obtaining the permanent license is 1,500 pesos, and according to the government, this procedure will be available until December 2025.
If the exam is failed twice, citizens are encouraged to schedule a new appointment to try again. Those who have a valid driver's license can obtain the permanent license automatically, but those sanctioned by the 'Drive without Alcohol' program will not have access to this option.
The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced the reintroduction of the permanent driver's license in November. Citizens can obtain this document through various means, such as the CDMX Chatbot, the Semovi appointment system, Locatel, and the Llave CDMX account.
The theoretical exam to obtain the permanent license includes 200 questions that must be answered within a maximum time of 25 minutes. Those with a history of type A licenses in Mexico City can schedule their appointment online to obtain the new permanent license. The minimum passing grade is 8 points, and in case of failing, a second chance to take the exam is offered.
